Iodine and your thyroid

Short answer: yes, Selkie contains iodine. It comes naturally from the sea moss and bladderwrack. If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, speak to your doctor before you start.

Where the iodine comes from

Seaweeds take up iodine from seawater. Bladderwrack in particular is one of the richest natural sources there is. Your thyroid uses iodine to make its hormones, which is part of why seaweed has been eaten for so long.†

Why we ask you to check first

Iodine is something your body needs, but the right amount depends on the person. If you have a diagnosed thyroid condition, or take medication such as levothyroxine, extra iodine from any source is worth running past your doctor first. That goes for Selkie and for seaweed in general.

How much is in it

Because Selkie is made from whole seaweed, iodine levels vary naturally from batch to batch. If your doctor wants detail for your situation, message us and we will help with what we can.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Iodine needs change during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check with your doctor or midwife before taking Selkie.
